01Who this is for

This is for people in Nairobi and across Kenya who want to lose weight steadily without crash diets, expensive imported “superfoods” or cutting out the food they grew up on.

It is also for people whose weight is tied to another health concern, such as type 2 diabetes, PCOS, high blood pressure or digestive problems. We build the plan around your health history, not just a number on the scale.

02How we build your plan

  • Consultation. We look at your goals, health history, medication, daily routine, work schedule and budget, so the plan fits your real life.
  • Your plan. You get a meal plan built around foods you already eat and can afford, with clear portions and easy swaps.
  • Follow-up. We review how things are going, adjust the plan and track your progress in your NourivaLink dashboard.

Your plan is guided by a qualified Nutritionist and Dietitian with advanced training in Food Safety and Quality. See our team for more.

03Eating for weight loss with Kenyan foods

These are general principles that many people find easy to start with:

  • Fill half your plate with vegetables. Sukuma wiki, managu, spinach, cabbage, carrots and kachumbari add volume and fibre for very little energy.
  • Add a protein to every meal. Beans, ndengu, eggs, fish such as tilapia or omena, chicken or lean meat help you feel full for longer.
  • Keep starch to about a quarter of the plate. Ugali, rice, githeri, sweet potatoes, arrowroots and green bananas are fine, in a measured portion.
  • Change how you cook. Boiling, steaming, stewing or grilling instead of deep frying cuts a lot of added fat. Go easy on the oil in chapati and fried snacks.
  • Watch what you drink. Soda, juice and heavily sweetened chai add up quickly. Water, unsweetened tea and plain milk in sensible amounts are better choices.
  • Plan your snacks. A fruit, a small handful of groundnuts or boiled eggs go further than biscuits or crisps.

This is general information, not a personal plan. What suits you depends on your health, your goals and your routine, which is what the consultation is for.

04What to expect

Health guidelines generally describe gradual weight loss, roughly 0.5 to 1 kg a week for many adults, as a sustainable pace. Your own pace depends on your starting point, health and how closely the plan fits your life, and results differ from person to person.

We do not promise quick fixes. The aim is a way of eating you can keep, so the weight stays off. Read our medical disclaimer for how to use the information on this site.

05Common questions

Do I have to give up ugali?

No. Ugali, rice, chapati, githeri and sweet potatoes can all stay on your plate. What changes is the portion size, how the meal is cooked, and what goes alongside it, such as more vegetables and a good protein.

Can I lose weight eating affordable, local food?

Yes. Beans, ndengu, eggs, omena, tilapia, cabbage, sukuma wiki, managu, arrowroots and seasonal fruit are all budget-friendly and work well in a weight loss plan. We build around foods you can find at your local market.

Is a weight loss plan safe if I have diabetes, PCOS or high blood pressure?

Your plan is adjusted to your health history, and we ask about your conditions and medication during your first consultation. Nutrition guidance works alongside medical care, not instead of it, so keep your doctor informed of any big change in how you eat.
